Thaumatropes:

Definition:

To make a thaumatrope:
You first need two images, one for each side.
The first image must not have the object on the second side.
The second sided image must be upside down to make the illusion work. Otherwise the second image will be upside down.
If youre adding something, the background must be white.
Have a hole at each two sides of the disk - to allow string to be attatched.
^Or allow space to add a pencil.

Ideas:
Headphones and music notes?
Woman dancing and a city street full of cars
Woman on one side of image, man on another? – suggests love? Kissing
Clock with bird in front? Clock without hands? – hands on other side
Sports?
Car on one side, road on another:

The design development cycle:

The first step is to ‘discover’. This is analysing and looking closer at the brief. This includes requirements, restrictions and general clarification of the clients wants. It is important through all the stages to be evaluating and seeing the important features of the images. This then can be used to show progress and how effective your images are at fitting the brief and moving on.

The second step is ‘research’ or planning. Here you would create a proposal, including a general timeline of ideas and implementing time to use the cycle many times before submission. You would design ideas, organise and present your ideas. You would look at work of others, still evaluating these images, like above; you would look at production methods, film or digital? Highly photo shopped or all in camera? You would create mind maps, mood boards and sketches.

The third step is to ‘test’. Here you would go out and photograph your subject, as planned above. You will edit and adjust your images and again evaluate. This is to show how close your images are to the brief. You should look at the compositions of the images and again evaluate.

The last step is to ‘review’. Here you should evaluate the effectiveness of the images, how strong they are compared to the brief and their weaknesses. Here you would really evaluate and state the weaknesses. This is so you can repeat the cycle producing higher quality images. It is repeated until you get your end goal, some images that fit the brief and appeal to the client.

Group piece – Initial ideas:
1. Clay models – child audience – animals?
2. Capturing dance, matching with individual? - Movements? Two performers?

Introduction:

Introduction:
This assignment is based on unit 7: design methods in art and design. The aim of this is for us to learn skills and understand the process of creating work, via using the design development cycle. We will explore the narrative genre in imagery and showing the passing of time and stories through multiple images. This could be through seconds, hours, days or years. It could be fact or fiction; it could be experimental, documentary or a conceptual piece.

We have three aims for this assignment, these include:
1. A description of the design development cycle- this will include a diagram, it being shown in use, through my work and explaining why and how it’s used.

2. A final piece, which consists of a minimum of three images, which tells a story. – These could be one image, with all included or three next to each other on a template.

3. A stop motion film – produced in a group or pairs. This will show good communication and teamwork.

There will have to be a proposal for the two pieces, the individual final and the group. This will show the target audience, health and safety and show a week-by-week plan, including who is doing what in the group final.
