The design development cycle:

The first step is to ‘discover’. This is analysing and looking closer at the brief. This includes requirements, restrictions and general clarification of the clients wants. It is important through all the stages to be evaluating and seeing the important features of the images. This then can be used to show progress and how effective your images are at fitting the brief and moving on.

The second step is ‘research’ or planning. Here you would create a proposal, including a general timeline of ideas and implementing time to use the cycle many times before submission. You would design ideas, organise and present your ideas. You would look at work of others, still evaluating these images, like above; you would look at production methods, film or digital? Highly photo shopped or all in camera? You would create mind maps, mood boards and sketches.

The third step is to ‘test’. Here you would go out and photograph your subject, as planned above. You will edit and adjust your images and again evaluate. This is to show how close your images are to the brief. You should look at the compositions of the images and again evaluate.

The last step is to ‘review’. Here you should evaluate the effectiveness of the images, how strong they are compared to the brief and their weaknesses. Here you would really evaluate and state the weaknesses. This is so you can repeat the cycle producing higher quality images. It is repeated until you get your end goal, some images that fit the brief and appeal to the client.
